How to start Romanian Point Lace

Romanian Point Lace is named sometimes Romanian needle lace or La spighetta Rumena

To make these beautiful laces in RPL-Romanian Point Lace technique we need:

–           a pattern, if you are a beginner, enthusiast or expert, you can find patterns  here;

–           a piece of white cotton cloth, starched (2 inches bigger than the chosen pattern) to transfer the paper printed pattern to the cloth

             carbon paper to transfer the pattern

      For safety, if the transfer was made using carbon paper (indigo), before basting the cord, wash the cloth with warm water and 2 tbsp. of white vinegar and iron it, face down.

    The cotton cloth have the role of supporting the final project and will not be present in its final form. Will be removed after the project is finished, washed, starched and ironed.

     Modern RPL Romanian Point Lace sometimes use direct the paper pattern, sewed under a thick plastic sheet but the advantage of the canvas support is that the project can be ironed before unfolding from the canvas, unlike the one applied on plastic which is ironed after the unfolding of the project (see storage instructions )

–           crocheted cotton cord (type according to the model), length specified in the project ;

If you have the cord ready (from the kit) or separately (from the shop) or other sources, you can start to baste the cord (according to the assembly instructions – link here)

             If you bought a model in PDF format (from here) and you want to crochet your own cord, the necessary materials are – RPL thread, special RPL hook, etc. , you can find similar in the area where you live. The only recommendation is to use only 100% cotton thread. Traditionally it is pale cream, rarely white and in modern variants colored or even gradients.

–           pale colored (pink or blue) cotton thread to baste the cord

–           sewing needle

–           cotton crochet thread for filling embroidery (cream or off-white) slightly thinner than the one used to crochet the cord. After mounting the cord on the whole model, we proceed to the execution of the bars and the interior embroidery.

–           some models have incorporated in the middle, embroidered canvas or small tapestries. These will be stitched separately and inserted into the composition after the execution of the RPL part, according to the instructions .

If you are a beginner in RPL-Romanian Point Lace Technique or you want to make small pieces that do not take too much time, choose one of our one-page models (see here).

These models do not exceed the size of an A4 page and the complexity of the design is accessible, suitable to practice the basic techniques before moving on to larger models that require more time and advanced skills.we
